Martin Wagner

Martin Wagner is the Managing Attorney of Earthjustice’s International Program, which uses US and international law to protect the human right to a clean and healthy environment. He was one of the primary drafters of the first human rights petition to assert violations arising out of the effects of climate change.  Martin’s work includes precedent-setting litigation and advocacy aimed at slowing global warming, opposing international trade measures that undermine environmental protections, and creating and defending mechanisms for public participation in environmental decision-making worldwide.

Martin also teaches international environmental and trade law classes at Golden Gate University School of Law, and is a member of the board of directors of AIDA, a collaborative effort of Earthjustice and similar organizations throughout the Americas to develop and use international citizen enforcement mechanisms to supplement domestic environmental protection efforts throughout the Western Hemisphere.

Martin graduated in the top ten percent of his class from University of Virginia School of Law, where he was Executive Editor of the Virginia Journal of International Law. Before coming to Earthjustice in 1996, he served as law clerk for a judge on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and spent five years litigating environmental citizen suits, civil rights actions and using international mechanisms for the protection of human rights. Before law school, Martin was a community development volunteer with the Peace Corps in Senegal, West Africa. Martin is fluent in English, Spanish, French and Pulaar/Fulani.
